Thanks to all. I have more information to take back to my faculty. I always thought offers like these were "too good to be true." Good to have confirmation.

Best,

Yeah, me too.

But I think we need to pull back and put ourselves in the place of a naive PI or Dean for whom none of these grant wisdom offerings are common sense and therefore, in the grand scheme of things, well worth a $300 investment to improve chances of getting $300,000. IF you don't have a great in-house resource, either in print or able to consult by voice, or a mentoring system, formal or informal, that WORKS, then it's hard to convince these people that these books and classes are a rip-off. We have all learned by experience. But leaving a young PI with even the impression that you are thinking that over time he/she will develop good grant proposal writing skills is an excellent way to introduce a communication barrier that you may never break down.

But yes! It's a rip-off. And more than a little unethical to sell recipes when none exist to hyper anxious people trying to keep a career intact.

It would have to be made of gold to be worth this much. NSF proposals aren’t that hard—it’s the SCIENCE that is being bought, not filling out forms. Anyone can learn how to fill out the forms. I can’t believe this is worth even a bit of the cost, but then I haven’t seen it I’m just a biased curmudgeon. Let’s say I’ve never seen anything in print that could be this expensive that is useful to the same degree,
