Appointment is anticipated July 1, 1998. Position Description The Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies provides leadership in advancing the University's mission in research and graduate studies. The Vice President is responsible for the development and management of externally-sponsored research and technology commercialization, and is also involved in economic and community development efforts related to research and technology transfer. Annual University investment in internally-funded research exceeds $3 million. Working in coordination with the academic deans, the Vice President oversees the management, quality, and effectiveness of all graduate programs. As a University planning unit, Research and Graduate Studies has an operating budget of approximately $2 million and includes 65 FTE staff positions. The Vice President reports dually to the president and provost. Qualifications Candidates must have an earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in their disciplines and extensive administrative experience with significant budgetary responsibility. They must also have academic achievements sufficient to warrant appointment as a tenured full professor, excellent oral and written communication skills, experience in strategic planning, demonstrated success in obtaining external grants and/or contracts, the ability to promote teamwork and cooperation among diverse constituencies, and a commitment to expand research opportunities within a multicultural, multidisciplinary, and multiple campus university. Experience in obtaining funding from private and corporate sources is highly desirable. It is expected that candidates for this position will have extensive understanding of significant national issues affecting research and graduate studies, and at least some knowledge of relevant international issues and trends. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Institution and Setting Ohio University is a state-assisted residential Research II university with more than $34 million in externally-sponsored research, instructional, and public service awards in FY97 and reported more than $8 million in federally supported expenditures for research to NSF in FY96. The university's portfolio includes some 20 issued patents and 35 active patent applications and disclosures. Located in the scenic Appalachian foothills 75 miles southeast of Columbus and established in 1804, it is the oldest university in the Northwest Territory. Undergraduate enrollments exceed 16,000 and graduate (including medical) enrollments exceed 3,000 on the Athens campus, with another 8,000 students, including 800 graduate students, at the five regional campuses. Ohio University offers bachelor's degrees in 92 fields, master's degrees in 48 fields, and doctoral degrees in 28 fields, including the Doctor of Osteopathy degree. Though students are predominantly from Ohio, the university enrolls students from all 50 states and from more than 100 countries. The total budget for 1997-98 exceeds $360 million.
