Vicki, NIH explains it best.

“subawards/consortium/contractual” costs should include the total cost of the subaward, and the entire third tier award is considered part of the direct costs of the consortium for the purposes of calculating the primary applicant’s direct costs.

Is it a full moon? Can we blame an entire week on a full moon?

Here’s my real question. Does anyone have a wonderful, concise, easily understandable document that explains to a PI that when you add a subcontract to an existing award that both the direct costs and indirect costs for that sub come out of the prime’s direct costs? I’ve had this come up more than once this week and have had to explain to incredulous faculty that we don’t simply give the subcontractor their IDC from our IDC.

My head hurts….
