We define cash cost sharing as those line items that we have to generate new cash to fund, so things like equipment, travel, materials/supplies, administrative personnel. Conversely, in-kind cost sharing for us are those line items that we don't have to generate cash in order to provide, so things like tuition, faculty contributed effort, and unrecovered f&a. ************************************************* ALDEN B. However, there are times when sponsors place restrictions on that. For example, we had a sponsor who limited cash match to new institutional commitments rather than allowing existing faculty salaries. And, there are sponsors who will only allow F&A to be counted as in-kind. In these cases, we grin and bare it. I have seen cash match defined as any $$ provided by the institution (including already-budgeted institutional salary and fringes), and conversely have also seen in-kind defined the same way. Thanks!
