Sorry to come in late on this. I needed to find a SF424 to confirm my comment. Note that the SF424 and the SF424R&R are different regarding the Contact People. The plain 424 does not have space for the PI. Kellie, if you have one that does, please send me a copy, thanks. I think there is always just the "Name and contact information of person to be contacted on matters involving this application." and the "Authorized Representative." The SF424Research and Related does have a space for the PI.

Those who developed the SF424 never had user input on who would be involved in a project so based the form on many non-university situations. The project director or manager's contact info would be included, as would that of the organization signing official. The developers did not take into account another layer of organization, as would be in place for a college or university with a grants office. This would also be true for a state/local government agency with a central office. Such holes in the form is the reason that the various research funding agencies took the effort to create the R&R form to use with Grants.gov.

Now, we in grants offices need to make a decision, as Teresa asks. PI's would like to have their name and info here, but that is dangerous. I think most of us want agencies to contact the people responsible for the project and who represent the organization submitting it. We will always get in touch with the PIs if there is something needed, but not sure if the reverse is true :)

We put the specific grants office person's info in this spot. It seems most schools do this. We also put that person's information in the Authorized Representative's contact sections as well; for all versions of the SF424. We do not want that signing official to get all the contacts.

We always enter sponsored programs info here, ensuring that our office is notified if any award is to be issued, and/or of any necessary follow up. The PI's information goes into the PI contact section. Where it gets more complicated is when an agency uses a SF-424 that does not include that PI contact section - I have run into that a handful of times. But even then, we put OSP info in the "Who to contact" area.

Colleagues --

Do you consider the SF-424 box "f. Name and contact information of person to be contacted on matters involving this application" to be the sponsored programs / grants administrator contact or the faculty Principal Investigator/Project Director? We have done a little of both and wondered how others regard this. Thanks!
