At LETU, we consider 12 hours/semester to be a full load.

Paul,

Clarification....what does your institution consider a full load to be?

Here at the University of Southern Maine, we consider that faculty have
4 blocks of time available each semester, or 8 for the academic year.
The normal load would be comprised of 3 courses and a
research/scholarship/public service block per semester. Therefore, each
block represents 12.5% of their effort and pay.

While we certainly strive to recover the full 12.5% of their pay for
each course release, in cases where there is a match/cost sharing
requirement, we often use the difference between the replacement cost of
that faculty member and the full 12.5% as cost sharing. Replacement
costs generally run in the vicinity of $1,200/credit hour.

I would appreciate any feedback from you all regarding this question:

What percentage of a faculty member's salary is needed from grant
funding to "buy out" his/her course load from a "full" load to a 6 hour
semester course load at your institution?

I would be happy to share results, in summary form, with respondents [or
with the listserv, if there is enough interest].
