I believe a lot of us will do this entirely in Excel - that's the way that I end up doing it at least. While coordinating and updating projections I'll typically bounce between two Excel files, one shadow sheet with the grant budget and actuals and then another which holds salary allocations for all the staff under my umbrella. Like with so many things it's an imperfect system but it works if you're comfortable customizing to your needs.

Does anyone have a tool or a method to track effort across all projects that is not part of a grants management system? We have a software but this portion is not very good and I am trying to figure out the best way to track. One of my struggles is, investigator allocated 20% on grant each year but NIH cuts the budget to the effort has to go down. Do you track both of those numbers or only actual? Any information would be helpful. Thanks.
