Assistant Director, Research & Innovation USF Sarasota Manatee campus

POSITION SUMMARY:  The primary purpose of this position is to strengthen and grow the USF research enterprise. In this role, the incumbent will work in a very collaborative environment with a small and agile team to handle both research development and research administration services. The incumbent will work with faculty researchers at all stages of the research enterprise, including helping identify sponsors, interaction with funding agencies, proposal development and submission, and post-award non-financial administration. Incumbent provides direct oversight and is responsible for the management, strategic planning, budget and leadership of research administration and business operations for research on the Sarasota-Manatee campus. Working closely with the Research Advisory Council, the incumbent will develop programs and initiatives designed to raise the visibility of campus research, host research workshops, support internal awards, and provide the conditions needed to conduct research.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serves as a leadership resource for the Sarasota-Manatee campus for all sponsored contracting matters.  Designs and implements programs that can significantly impact the research enterprise. Liaise with sponsors, college leaders, school/department administrators, and Principal Investigators as needed, in support of a high level customer service to each party. Responsible for formulating and recommending policies affecting research and to participate in cross-functional policy development.

Coordinates with external speakers to support education and training initiatives that forward the research mission. Develops and delivers workshops, including the Research Round Tables and other outreach efforts designed to train University faculty, student researchers and staff in the proper stewardship of grant and contract funding. and  provide the tools and training needed for success in research.

Participates in the development of and delivery of workshops, trainings and web resources related to proper stewardship of sponsored project funding, post-award and other research compliance topics.

Hire, train and manage staff for the SM campus research office. Manage office budget. Establish and manage mission-driven investments in faculty programs and initiatives, such as the faculty awards, small equipment grants, research magazine, student internships that aim to provide the conditions for faculty to prepare competitive extramural submissions that lead to awards. Budget also provides for professional development conferences and continuing education in research administration.

Design and deliver internal award initiatives that contribute to the strategic development of meaningful research programs. Expand communication of new grant opportunities. Support transdisciplinary research teams and proposals that align with federal programs. Demonstrate success at working in a highly matrixed work environment and organizational structure and balancing needs of multiple stakeholders appropriately. Authority to make recommendations and effectively influence the mission and strategic planning, and lead efforts to develop procedures and practices to enhance research. Provides creative problem solving and process improvement strategies.

Raise the visibility of Research. Initiatives such as the research magazine highlight university partnerships, externally sponsored programs, student researchers and recognition of faculty awards, books, etc. Additionally, partner with faculty on special events (e.g. Drone Conference) that connect the campus and the community around innovation and education. Participate in community events and at national/global conferences to promote USF research and help achieve a greater national reputation. Responsible for establishing and maintaining internal (across USF) and external relationships required to realize research goals of the campus and functional areas across the research enterprise.
