We don't compensate the committee on this campus, but we do compensate the faculty chair, who contributes significant amounts of time.  Because of the difficulty of paying a full-time faculty member except in the summer, when he's covered already by grants, we decided on an indirect method.   We pay for a 50% time graduate research assistant for him for the academic year.  It amounts to $12,000 - $15,000 per year.
