Re: European Union MDaniel@xxxxxx 31 Aug 1999 09:04 EST

Rebecca,

I have only limited experience with EU grants, having served as support
staff
for project director of a multi-year EU grant while I was living in
Germany. The
project involved six partner institutions in five different countries, and
the
challenge was not the administrative policies of the EU but maintaining
good
collaboration among the participants. I was actually a member of the
secretarial
staff of the project director but was involved in preparing the competitive
continuation application and kept track of the project expenditures. I did
not
find the EU difficult to work with, but I am not sure how relevant this
experience is for your purpose since it was four years ago AND I was
located in
Germany with relatively less complicated access to the Brussels offices.
Things
did get more complicated when the switch was made to using the Euro as the
currency for all grant transactions since this considerably slowed the
transfer
of funds to the respective partners.

I have a faculty member who is a Belgian citizen and is interested
in grants from the European Union. Does anyone have any experiences
that they would share? It has been indicated to me that the
post-award process has been difficult to administer, and I am
interested in others' feelings.
Thank you,
Rebecca
