DIRECTOR, GRANTS ADMINISTRATION
The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) is recruiting for the position
of Director of Grants Administration.  This position is responsible for the
management of funded projects (Research, Education and Training) which
includes inter-institutional contractual arrangements, systems for reporting
and monitoring receivables, and budget negotiations.  S/he develops
strategic planning and research advancement procedures and policies,
including training and career development tools for faculty and staff at the
RIC.

This position also has fiscal responsibility for the Department of Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation of Northwestern University Medical School,
including annual departmental budget preparation and monitoring, assistance
with grant submissions, and pre/post award requirements.  S/he works closely
with Chairman of the department as primary contact with NU Medical School
Medical Administration department regarding operations of the department.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 In consultation with the Searle Director of Research, the Vice President
for Financial Affairs, and the Chair of the Department of PM&R of
Northwestern University, develops goals and objectives for area of
responsibility that are congruent with the overall funded project goals of
RIC.  As part of this objective, the Director of Grants Administration plans
and implements a strategic research planning initiative which draws upon
national experience in research planning for peer rehabilitation facilities
and other research institutions.
 Compiles, allocates, and sets-up budget cost centers.
 Prepares, monitors, and reviews all contracts related to funded projects.
 Negotiates indirect cost rate agreement.
 Ensures effective project administration by maintaining liaison with
grantor�s representatives and financial officers.
 Provides assistance to principal investigators in budget preparation for
grant/contract applications, reviews financial and administrative
requirements, contract applications for appropriateness of
categories/expenses and prepares financial section of grant/contract
applications in conformance with regulations.
 Issues billings in conformity with contract specifications and/or
government regulations.  Submits final reports of expenditures to funding
agencies.
 Monitors, controls, and reconciles grants accounts, revenue, and expenses.
 Prepares monthly and/or periodic reports to principal investigators,
management, and/or funding agency.
 Maintains regular contact with all levels of Institute management and
outside agencies when gathering data, exchanging information, discussing
grant regulations and policies, discussing budget status of grant
applications and the like.
 Together with the Searle Director of Research, develops individualized
faculty research plans as a component of career development and annual
evaluation procedures for faculty.
 Together with research department staff, develops and implements a
research training program, dealing with procedures and methods for
successful grant submission.
 Maintains knowledge of current accounting and finance methods in order to
enhance professional expertise by reading appropriate professional
literature, attending seminars, workshops and professional organization
meetings and the like.
 Accesses two accounting systems, hospital-based and university-based.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
 Knowledge of accounting, finance, statistical analyses, and general
business administration at a level normally acquired through completion of a
Bachelor�s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field, including cost
allocation accounting methods.
 Approximately 5 years work experience in various aspects of grants
administration in order to provide the resource background to ensure
development.
 Interpersonal skills necessary in order to effectively negotiate and
manage grant function.
 Problem-solving skills necessary in order to direct the grant
administration function and prepare special and recurring reports and
analyses.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Position will report to the Searle Director of Research and receive
additional direction from Department Chair of PM&R, and Chief Financial
Officer of Institute.

Position will have supervisory responsibility for positions of Business
Support Manager, Sensory Motor Performance Program and Business Support
Manager, Department of Research/PM&R.
