Re: Software for NSF FastLane Caskey, William PhD. 23 Jul 1999 12:23 EST

LInux users should be able to access FastLane using their favorite Web
browser (most use Netscape). Adobe does offer Acrobat 3.01 for Linux and
other UNIX systems ( http://www.adobe.com <http://www.adobe.com> ). In a
prior life at universities, the university would negotiate an educational
discount or some other arrangement, but actual purchase of the software was
up to the users. So, I think the question should be placed to IS on your
campus to negotiate such an agreement with Adobe Acrobat for both Windows
and Unix/Linux systems. You should also look into StarOffice. StarOffice is
an office suite offering the same components and Microsoft Office, but uses
a different paradigm (i.e., a single interface rather than separate programs
for word processing, spreadsheet, etc). StarOffice is available in a Windows
version and a Linux version. Copies of either may be downloaded FREE from
http://www.stardivision.com/index.html
<http://www.stardivision.com/index.html> (must register however to obtain
the necessary information to install and use). Corporate site licenses are
also available. StarOffice imports and exports documents in Microsoft Office
format.
