Paying International Consultants Matt Ronning 28 May 1999 13:47 EST

Our current procedure for paying consultants requires a social security number (or EIN) in order to effectuate a payment from our procurement system. The question has arisen as to how we can pay international consultants where a social security number is not available. This question comes from both the sponsored programs side and the non-sponsored programs side of the house.

a) Is there a visa requirement?
b) What exemptions are available for 1099 filing, etc?
c) How does your organization handle this type of activity?

Thank you in advance for your answers. You may reply to me directly or via the list.
