*Aside from the rules in the PHS 398 instructions, there are a few other
*reasons to not cram a lot of small text onto a page.  Peter mentioned one:
*reviewers responding poorly to applicants taking unfair advantage.

*Another is READABILITY.  Readability is a function of both the ease of
*focusing and the quality of the writing.  I hypothesize that researchers
*who need to use Franklin Gothic Condensed 10.83 point (not to mention
*omitting spaces between paragraphs and abusing margins) in order to meet
*the 25 page limit are NOT the best writers.

*User friendly (if not elegant) English is not only an excellent tool to
*engender interest, convey passion, and prove a point...it makes for happy
*and wide awake reviewers, especially those from California taking the late
