Response to list serve regarding faculty incentives Judy Wilks 14 May 1999 15:18 EST

>Thank you for your responses regarding incentives for grant active faculty,
>including the return of some portion of the F & A (indirect costs) to
>faculty, departments or colleges. We received approximately 15 responses
>to the survey, most from public institutions.
>
>In the case of the public institution respondents, all returned some
>portion of indirect cost revenue either to the school or department and, in
>fewer cases, to the faculty.
>- Approximately 20% of the publics returned indirect costs to the faculty.
>-20% returned indirect costs to the departments.
>-All returned some indirects to the school or college (average percentage
>of return - 25%).
>
>With respect to salary relief, several respondents indicated that a portion
>of the salary relief is returned to the department, while three indicated
>the Dean retains any residual salary relief after paying for adjuncts.
>
>There were interesting responses regarding other faculty incentives. The
>most common incentives are seed grants, cost-sharing funds, and travel
>money. One private institution abandoned seed research grants several
>years ago because the amounts were too small to be useful and there was no
>increase in proposals submitted as a result of the seed grants. One public
>institution set up a research initiative fund wherein a portion of F&A
>(indirect costs) can be used for expenses that cannot normally be charged
>to grants and contracts. This money is distributed by the chair. One
>respondent had included an extensive list of incentives with the caveat
>they have been tried with varying degrees of success:
>
>1. Establishing faculty endowments
>2. Providing seed monies for new research ideas that hold promise
>3. Subsidizing central research facilities.
>4. Providing central funding for graduate research assistants support.
>5. Providing equipment cost-sharing funds.
>6. Providing adequate release time to write proposals.
>7. Providing funds for interdisciplinary research collaborations.
>8. Modernizing facilities as needed to promote effective use of research
space.
>
>Thank you again for your responses.
