Region I Spring Meeting:

The Regional Spring Meeting will be held from June 6th to 9th at the Holiday Inn
in Portland, Maine.

Portland is a four-season destination in southern Maine, that offers scenic
beauty, splendid recreational opportunities and a wealth of historic and
cultural attractions. Portland's bustling waterfront is alive with activity and
people: fisherman and ferries; sightseeing cruises and pleasure boats;
restaurants and shops. Portland is surrounded by classic New England villages,
wide sandy beaches and Freeport, home of the renowned LL Bean. To find out more
about Portland, visit the website at: http://www.visitmaine.com

The Spring Meeting program offers two exciting workshops. The first is a
hands-on computer workshop, designed for all levels of administrators, to be
taught by one of the Region's best, Steve Dowdy from MIT. Join Steve as he leads
us into the next millenium of ERA. The second workshop will be conducted by Paul
O'Keefe and Linda Nolan from the University of Massachusetts Boston. This
newcomers workshop will be a practical introduction to the OMB Circulars.

In addition, we have assembled some of the Region's finest faculty to conduct
the numerous sessions offered. Session topics include Time and Effort Reporting,
Cost Sharing, Training, Indirect Costs, Small Institution Challenges, and the
"Grants Game." We will once again be offering updates from the National Science
Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. The University of Southern
Maine has graciously offered us use of their computer facilities. Look for
offerings on NSF FastLane, the Internet and Surfing the NSF/NIH sites.

Another special feature of the Spring Meeting will be a joint session with the
Office of Naval Research. ONR is sponsoring a one-day conference on Wednesday,
June 9, aimed at researchers and administrators from universities and businesses
in the New England area. We will share a plenary session on Wednesday morning
and on Wednesday afternoon, NCURA attendees are invited to participate in a ½
day workshop geared specifically for research administrators. This is a
wonderful opportunity to learn about ONR programs and research priorities, as
well as interact directly with their grants administrators.

In addition to the Newcomers and Opening Reception, a special bash is being
planned for Monday night. Join your colleagues for a scrumptious dinner at one
of Portland's finer restaurants. After dinner, listen to the great sounds of
Portland's own band, the Underachievers!
