Incentives Provided to Funded Researchers Judy Wilks 20 Apr 1999 12:54 EST

Tulane has undertaken an extensive planning process built around themes,
one of which is creating a high quality research environment. As part of
its charge, a committee is looking into the types of incentives other
institutions provide funded researchers. I would appreciate a response if
your institution does any of the following. In particular, it would be
extremely helpful to have responses from both public and private
institutions to give us comparables of whether there is different treatment
between those two groups.

1.Does your institution return some portion of the F & A (indirect costs) to
(A) faculty
(B) departments
(C) schools or colleges

2. If so, is it formula driven? In other words, a certain percentage goes
to the researcher, to the department, etc.

3. Does your institution return any portion of salary relief to an
investigator/department?

4. Are there any restrictions on the use of these funds?

5. Do you have other incentives for research active faculty such as
providing seed monies for promising new research ideas, subsidized central
research facilities, pooled cost sharing funds, etc.

Thank you in advance for your help. We can post a summary of the answers
back to the list if that would be helpful.
