We don't have the authority to require a release, but our IRB strongly
advocates it and Chair pro tems and their Department Heads are counseled
that it would be prudent. It doesn't always happen, however. Our load two
years ago was 121 renewals (Chair was a primary reviewer for renewals and
reviews all amendments to existing protocols), 191 full reviews (Chair is a
reviewer), 61 expedites (Chair is one of the two reviewers), 36 exempts
(Chair often reviews) for a total of 410 protocols (not including
amendments). The IRB meets monthly and the Chair is consulted multiple
times in between about various situations.
