I am happy to post my results of my little survey regarding
reporting lines (academic vs finance).  I was thrilled to receive
53 responses from a wide range of institutions.

Of those offices which are primarily pre-award, 23 out of 24
report to an academic position (one reports to development).

Of those offices which are primarily post-award, 15 out of 16
report to a finance position (one reports to both academic and
finance!).

Of those offices which are both preaward and postaward,
26 out of 27 report to an academic position (one reports to finance).

Those respondents who gave me the total annual dollars
broke out like this:

 15 institutions averaging 1M to 20 M
 10 institutions averaging 21M to 50M
 6 institutions averaging 51M to 135M
