A complex and rapidly growing research administration office is looking for an experienced,
dynamic and energetic research administrator to join our team.  Over $214 million in grants
and contracts was awarded to Northwestern in fiscal year 1998.

RESEARCH ADMINISTRATOR
OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND SPONSORED PROGRAMS (ORSP)
NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY
Evanston Campus

Responsibilities:

Responsible for sponsored project administration including proposal review and submission,
data management, contract negotiation, subcontract preparation, and post-award
administration for a select constituency (mainly in schools of engineering and speech).  Review
and negotiate sponsored project contracts with an emphasis on industrial and defense
contracts.  Work on special assignments such as assessing funding trends and opportunities,
preparing special analyses and reports, and develop training sessions for investigators and
administrative staff.  Participate in the development and implementation of new policies and
revisions to existing policies.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred or equivalent combination of
education, training, and experience.  Knowledge of federal grant and contract administration,
policies relating to the protection of intellectual property rights, and cost principles for
educational institutions is expected.  Previous work experience (at least five years) in
sponsored project administration at either an educational institution or federal agency.
Experience negotiating federal and industrial contracts, including a working knowledge of FAR
clauses applicable to educational institutions is required. Knowledge of general management
principles and practices, skill in dealing with others in work relationships involving conflict
resolution, and the ability to make difficult decisions is essential.  Proficiency in word-
processing, spreadsheet, and database software is expected. Excellent oral and written
communication skills and the ability to work efficiently and effectively under deadline pressures
are critical.  Strong service orientation is necessary.

Salary:  Competitive and commensurate with experience

The ORSP staff of 24 currently administers a portfolio in excess of $214 million annually.
