Re: cost sharing William Sellers 26 Feb 1999 14:13 EST

Dear Susan,

I believe cost sharing of F&A would be related to your institution's
policy on F&A exceptions: whenever you recovered less than the full
rate, the residual would of necessity be cost-shared. And conversely,
you couldn't "cost share indirects" unless the exception was in
accordance with your F&A policy. At Wright State, we basically allow an
F&A exception if it's the sponsor's policy or, in the interest of
state/local economic development, if the sponsor is "Ohio-based" (even
commercial firms get this break) -- see
http://www.media.wright.edu/wrightway/5305.html. So far we have not had
to make exceptions to these exceptions!

With respect to cost sharing faculty time, that is a different issue and
you may be asking whether we have any guidelines on how much is too
much. We would leave this decision up to the relevant dean.

A good source for general guidance is found in the University of
California Contract and Grant Manual Chapter 5, at
http://www.ucop.edu/raohome/cgmanual/chap05.html.
