EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
OFFICE OF TECHNOLOGY & SPECIAL PROJECTS
University of Missouri - Columbia
The University of Missouri - Columbia (MU) is seeking an innovative,
energetic, and experienced individual to serve as Executive Director of its
newly-created Office of Technology & Special Projects (OTSP). The Executive
Director will report to the Vice Provost for Research at MU. The Director
will also have some responsibilities on the four-campus University of
Missouri system level and will work closely with a Steering Committee
composed of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the chief research
officers of the four campuses in fulfilling these tasks. The Executive
Director of OTSP is expected to interact closely with faculty as well as
community, business, and state government leaders throughout Missouri in
developing the technologies generated by our faculty and students. The OTSP
Director and staff will (1) assess the commercial feasibility of the
university's intellectual properties, (2) assist in the university's patents
and licensing operations, (3) coordinate the development of business plans
for new spin-off companies, and (4) help faculty design proposals and
management teams to compete for large projects, national centers, and
program project grants.
We are seeking an individual with a Ph.D. or equivalent experience
in a high technology area, especially biological, biomedical, or engineering
technologies. Ideally, the Executive Director should have experience in
both university and industry environments. This individual should have an
established record of success in technology transfer, intellectual property
management, and university/industry contracting. The Director will
collaborate with technology managers, an intellectual property legal expert,
grant prospect and grant writing personnel, and patents and licensing
managers. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
The University of Missouri - Columbia is an AAU, Carnegie I research
university. It is one of only five universities in the country with
Colleges of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Law, Agriculture, and Engineering
all on one campus. MU also has excellent Colleges of Arts & Sciences,
Education, Journalism, Nursing, Human Environmental Sciences, and Business &
Public Administration. For FY98, MU spent $138M in its research activities;
the campus has over $375M in current grants and contracts. The university
has recently begun a new "mission enhancement" program that will result in
the hiring of over 100 new tenure-track faculty in strategic program areas
during the next four years. These include enhancements across the life
sciences, in connecting research and undergraduate/graduate programs,
research on economic, educational, and social issues, and our transition to
the global information age.
The Executive Director of the Office of Technology & Special
Projects will have a unique and exciting opportunity to develop new
relationships with industry as part of an emerging biotechnology and
telecommunications technology corridor which links Kansas City to St. Louis
through Columbia and Rolla. This position will offer considerable
opportunity for career growth and development within a unique university
setting.
