NIH paylines Charlie Hathaway 26 Jan 1999 10:04 EST

Hi-

Those of you handling large numbers of NIH grant applications may have been
asked the following question by investigators:

"Which NIH institutes have the best paylines?"

A very few Institutes publish these numbers on the web,
e.g. NIAID (see http://www.niaid.nih.gov/ncn/payline3.htm).

Aside from the fact that trying to target one's application to a given
institute or review group can often backfire, the intensity of the
competition makes these kinds of strategic considerations quite tempting.
And for many of the most basic science proposals, there may be a reasonable
choice of 2 or 3 institutes.

Does anyone know of a good way to get this information?

I have made phone calls in the past and found a diversity of reactions from
the different institutes. In some cases, there does not seem to be a
single %ile that applies throughout for the standard R01 application.

All comments will be appreciated.

Thanks

Charlie Hathaway
