Director of Office of Sponsored Programs

SUNY Cortland seeks a Director of its Office of Sponsored Programs.  The
College, which traces its beginnings to 1868, offers programs both in the arts
and sciences and in professional studies leading to the award of bachelor's and
master's degrees.  SUNY Cortland is accredited academically by The Middle
States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

Cortland is an institution of moderate size, with 5,300 undergraduate students
and 1,200 graduate students.  It has a strong tradition in teacher education
and blends a complex program of professional studies, arts and sciences, and
programs in multicultural education and diversity issues.  Located in the heart
of New York just off Interstate 81, the City of Cortland is the political and
economic center to the county*s 49,000 residents.  Upstate New York provides a
variety of educational, recreational, cultural and culinary opportunities.  The
area adjoins the beautiful Finger Lakes and is home to ski resorts, vineyards,
national businesses and industries, farming and dozens of colleges and
universities.  Cortland is within easy driving distance of Syracuse, Binghamton
and Ithaca and only a few hours from New York City, Toronto or Montreal.  The

Responsibilities:

The Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs reports to the Provost and
supports University policies and procedures in matters involving sponsored
activities including but not limited to:

*       directing all aspects of pre-award activities, including: the
dissemination of information on externally sponsored research opportunities;
the preparation of external grant/contract proposals/applications and budgets;
the negotiation of all externally funded grants and contracts
*       coordinating technical and faculty effort post-award reporting to
researchers and to sponsoring agencies
*       directing efforts to ensure compliance with all institutional, state
and federal regulations, including protocols for human subjects
*       representing the office on various College committees

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must have a thorough understanding of all aspects of
both pre-and post-award sponsored programs administration.  Knowledge of
state-of-the-art electronic research administration is essential.
Well-developed oral and written communication skills, creativity in the
encouragement of research and entrepreneurship, and a high sense of
self-motivation, initiative, and follow-through are crucial.  A thorough
knowledge of cost accounting principles, and familiarity with contract
negotiation and intellectual property issues are desirable.  Three to five
years work-related experience with evidence of successful grant acquisition.
The salary is commensurate with experience.  A master*s degree is required, a
Ph.D. preferred.
