Middlebury college grants "academic leave" (ie, sabbatical) on the basis of
a proposed project.  If faculty members can find external funding to support
salary costs of that project, that's great -- and either augments their
college leave or occasionally it actually offsets costs we would otherwise
incur.  Their total salary (from all sources) can't exceed 100% of their
base salary and is paid through our payroll system the same as
college-funded salary.
