Dear RESADM-L friends (especially hospital-based administrators),

the employee newsletter for our health center just hit my desk, and it
contains
a brief item about the importance of JCAHO accreditation. One sentence
caught my
eye: "without JCAHO accreditation, we would not be eligible for federal
grants
and therefore would not be able to collaborate with the community on
important
health issues..."

The importance of accreditation notwithstanding, this is news to me. I have
 not
seen any federal grant programs which stipulate accreditation as an
eligibility
criterion. But I will admit that I have much to learn about grants
administration in the healthcare setting.

Perhaps the writer was thinking of Medicare and assumes all federal funding
falls under the same rules for eligibility. What do you know about this? Is
JCAHO (or any other) type of accreditation a factor in eligibility for
federal
grants?
