Every May our scientists hold an "Advance" (forward-looking rather than
"retreat"ing) off campus for two days. They present their own research and our
graduate students present their work also. Prizes are given for the best
paper(s) given by graduate students.

Forgive me if we have had this discussion already. At a meeting yesterday,
some investigators suggested that we host a "research day" in which our PIs
present posters, abstracts, etc. to one another and possibly to reps from
industry as well. Related suggestions included awarding prizes and
particularly focusing on fellows and junior faculty.
Are there other teaching hospitals or research institutes out there doing
something similar? How is it received and regarded by the faculty?

Our hospital (private, NFP, no university affiliation) has a research
day for residents and fellows prior to 'graduation'. Usually a full
day in the first week of June. This year, more than 2 dozen
residents/fellows presented their research efforts. Topics ranged from
the obligatory chart review to some fairly cutting edge gene transfer
studies. A fair number of the faculty and independent physicians who
play an active role in the resident program will at least make an
appearance. Few stay for the entire day.
Hope that helps.

The trouble with doing something right the first time is that nobody
appreciates how difficult it was.

We have typically held research day which highlights senior residents in
the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation: we hold a buffet
luncheon, an afternoon of research presentations, followed by a light
reception. Getting senior faculty/attendings to attend has always been an
issue - typically the sponsor or mentor for a specific resident will show
for his/her presentation and then leave. A few will stay longer -- we are
thinking of breaking up the presentations next year into two segments,
hoping to capture a larger audience if we are only asking them for an hour
or so of their time -- rather than an afternoon.
We are also holding an institute-wide research week this year, with events
spread out over 4 days - focusing on clinical (primarily nursing/allied
health) professionals and our research faculty, engineers and staff. This
worked well as a one-day open house last year -- a lot of pre-event hype on
our part, a scavenger hunt with a prize attached was a big success.
Ensured that folks visited each of the labs or areas of interest on the
"tour".
