at nyu we finally went to a system of retaining proposals for 18
months after submission...we then returned them to the pi (minus notes
and administrative comments) with the recommendation that they keep
the copy in their files (since we all know that 10 years after the
fact they MUST have a copy to prepare a new proposal).  i'd be very
interested in the results of your survey, since i'm setting up filing
and retention procedures for my new office.
