Try Gerald J. Stahler and William R. Tash, "Sucess in Funding at the
Fastest Growing Research Universities: Contributory Factors and
Impediments," Research Management Review, vol 6 (Spring 1992), pp.
14-24.  The same authors published a more detailed study in (I believe)
Science, but I don't have the citation.  Also, I should think by now
others have done similar work, which could be found by checking a
citation index.
