The following is a copy of what I sent directly to Cathy. I didn't reply to the
list because I wasn't sure it was any help, but maybe more people would be
interested:
A good read on the subject of competitiveness in research is Competitiveness in
Academic Research, edited by Albert H. Teich and published by AAAS . He
discusses (with many references to actual studies) barriers placed before PIs,
complaints by PIs, input from research administrators, etc. It was published in
1996, so it should be pretty up to date. While there is some statistical
material in the book, the data is primarily in the references. It is, however,
geared toward academic institutions. I don't know how Shriner's is set up, and
how much different (or similar) the mindset would be for faculty from that found
in a university.

At one point I had posed a question to the group relative to incentives, I can
only tell you that I did not get one reply. Hope you do better! AND, if you
do, I would definitely appreciate it if you could share your information.

Hi there,
I'm in the process of creating a "investigator incentive"
program and seek statistical material to reference on
motivating (and non-motivating) factors relative to PI's.
I'm also looking at what PI's feel is most important to
them, for example; 1st=salaries, 2nd=their projects,
3rd=dept, 4th=institution, and so on.
I look forward to your input.
Thank you.
Cathy
