Invitation to NCURA Region III Meeting in Charleston Barbara Gray 04 Mar 1998 18:18 EST

Dear RESADM Members:

It is my pleasure to invite you to the National Council of University
Research Administrators Region III meeting in Charleston, South
Carolina, on April 30-May 3, 1998. The theme of our meeting is "A
'Charleston Receipt' for Success in Research Administration: A Blend of
Tradition, Innovation, and Leadership." For those of you who have never
visited the Lowcountry of South Carolina or studied Southern customs and
vocabulary, I must explain that "receipt" is the old-time regional word
for "recipe." Since Charleston is known for, among other things, its
culinary treats, the Region III Program Committee felt it appropriate to
have a food theme.

We will open our meeting with a keynote address by Dr. Donald R. Pettit,
NASA Astronaut Candidate (Mission Specialist). Three additional plenary
sessions will be offered dealing with research administration in the new
millenium and electronic commerce with federal agencies. Eighteen
concurrent sessions will address the meeting tracks of Tradition,
Innovation, and Leadership. Here's a sampling of concurrent session
titles:

- Real Leaders Don't Eat Quiche: Gender Differences in Leadership
- Should You Tell Your Guests It Came From a Can? Ethical Dilemmas in
Research
- Four Star Service: How to Evaluate Your Sponsored Programs Office
- Who's Minding the Cookie Jar? A Federal Agency Update
- Cooking With Heat: Leadership in a Time of Change
- Keeping the Salad in the Bowl: Techniques for Getting Along with
Faculty

Six workshops covering five topics are also planned. They include a
survival course for new and part-time research administrators, team
building, hands-on FastLane training, effective management techniques,
and hands-on internet resources for the research administrator.

In addition to these educational sessions, we have planned several
social activities that will provide opportunity for informal interaction
and networking. Our opening reception, hosted by the College of
Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina, will take place
in one of Charleston's many historic houses (the Blacklock House, circa
1800) and will feature Lowcountry specialities that will delight the
palate. In keeping with our tradition of "One Beachin' Region," we will
return to the shores of the Atlantic for a beach party which will
feature more Lowcountry fare, fun, and entertainment. Optional
activites for meeting registrants and their guests include a golf outing
at Charleston's tournament class course, dinner groups at some of
Charleston's finest restaurants, a narrated walking tour of the city,
and "The Serenade Show," a Broadway musical, Charleston style.

Are you intrigued? You can find the complete program and registration
information for the Charleston meeting (including color photographs of
the city and points of interest) through the NCURA National and Region
III web sites or by clicking on the following URL:

Materials are available in .PDF format, which requires Adobe Reader, V.
3.0 or later, for viewing. Adobe Reader is free. If you do not
currently have it on your computer, you may download your free copy by
clicking on the Adobe button on the link provided. Once you have opened
the program in Adobe, you may print it so that you can complete the
registration form. [NOTE: Adobe Reader will not SAVE a file. You must
use your browser's "SAVE" or "SAVE LINK AS ..." command to save a copy
for later printing or viewing.]

Please note that the total program is a very large file. Some
institutions' computing departments limit the size of files that can be
downloaded. If you have difficulty opening the full program file, you
may instead open the three smaller files that each contain a section of
the program booklet.

As the South is know for its warm hospitality, Region III welcomes folks
from all areas of the country--and you need not be a member of NCURA to
attend our regional meeting. Therefore, I extend our traditional
invitation to you:

"Y'all come now, ya hear!"

Barbara Gray
Chair-Elect, NCURA Region III
