=91Investment in Research=92 - Summary

On January 24th 1998, a message was posted on the Research
Administrators List Server detailing the unique organizational position
of Arkansas Children=92s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) and the
nature of the research investment received from the Arkansas =
Children=92s
Hospital (ACH). Members with a similar relationship to their parent
organizations were asked if they could detail the nature and size of =
the
research investment they received from their parent body. Below is a
summary of the responses.

Types of Research Investment

 Flat $ contribution each year
 Research Endowment
 Capital Equipment Funding
 Contribution based on a percentage of Award Expenditures
(different      percentages for different award types)
 A percentage of total research expenditure (including awards)

Size of Research Investment=20

 $300,000 per year (on $14m awards) + interest on $8m endowment +
$100,000 capital equipment funding
 $250,000 per year (on $7m awards)
 $300,000 per year (on $10m awards)
 25% * Total Federal Grant Expenditures + 15% * Total Clinical
Trial           Expenditures
 10% of total research budget (including awards)
 25% of total research budget (including awards)

Medicare Cost Allocation=20

Two of the organizations were required to cover Medicare allocated =
costs
as part of their profit center accounting.=20
