VICE PROVOST FOR RESEARCH
WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY
Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Vice
Provost for
Research at Washington State University.
Appointment is anticipated July 1, 1998.
The University
Washington State University (WSU) is the Land Grant institution and a
major
research university in the State of Washington. The main campus of the
WSU
system is located in Pullman. The Pullman campus with an enrollment of
nearly
17,000 students
is one of the largest residential universities in the West. Three
branch
campuses enrolling a total of about 3,000 students are located in the
Spokane,
TriCities, and Vancouver metropolitan areas. Agricultural research and
extension centers are also located throughout the state. WSU's faculty
of
about 1,900 includes a substantial number of scholars with national and
international reputations. Sponsored program activity for the
University
totaled $116 million for fiscal year 1997.
Position Description
The Vice Provost for Research is expected to provide the visionary
leadership
necessary to raise the stature of WSU as a major research institution
and to
diversify support for research activities. In this capacity, the Vice
Provost
shall:
Serve as senior administrative officer for research with specific
responsibilities for overseeing the support areas of grant and contract
preaward services and technology transfer and patents and for
supervising
multidisciplinary and intercampus research programs and service units.
Strengthen the relationship and visibility of WSU with federal and
state
government agencies, research institutes, private foundations, and
corporations.
Advocate faculty research endeavors and facilitate interdisciplinary
and
intercampus research projects.
Ensure institutional compliance with government regulations for
human
subjects, animal care and use, conflict of interest, scientific
integrity, and
biosafety.
Communicate effectively the research role of the University with the
State
Legislature and the general public.
Qualifications
Earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree and an academic
record
sufficient to merit appointment as a tenured full professor.
Demonstrated success in obtaining external grants and/or contracts
in
support of independent research.
Service on federal research review committees, advisory boards, or
policy
and planning committees. Preferably, a candidate will have been
involved in
shaping policy at the national level.
Familiarity with public (state and federal) and private research
funding
sources.
Knowledge of the research and development needs of the private
sector,
including technology transfer activities and intellectual property
issues.
Strong written and oral communications skills.
Understanding of national trends affecting academic research and
ability to
develop a strategic research plan.
Familiarity with a range of disciplines & diversity of a major
research &
land grant university.
Administrative experience of at least the level of academic
department
chair or equivalent.
Salary
The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and
experience.
