Reporting Multiple Year Awards -Reply

Sherry, in my own database and the reports it produces, I use whatever figure
is in the award document. Most ED grants are one year totals, for example, but
NSF grants are typically for multiyear amounts. So I'll report a four year NSF
grant once, a four year ED grant four times. I do it that way because I'm
primarily interested in measuring the effects of our pre-qward activities,
which is my first responsibility. Our grants accountant is primarily
responsible for reporting yearly grant income, so she counts differently in her
reports.
As a result, the yearly totals I report are somewhat different from the amounts
reported by our grants accountant. So far that's not presented a problem. I
always point out those discrepancies and explain them (though briefly) in my
reports. I'm not at all sure anyone notices. That's okay with me; I generate
those reports mostly for my own use. (Though I like to create a few dramatic
graphs for showing-off purposes, too.)
