Re: funds for editors David V. Cohn 20 Jun 1997 17:16 EST

Editing a major professional journal is a service function that deserves the
 support of
the University administration. It is not uncustomary therefore for
 Deans/Chairs/Provosts
to provide some secretarial relief plus access to phones, fax, etc. On the
 other hand,
the publisher of these journals derive a reasonable profit from professional
 journals,
whether owned by the professional society or by the publishing house. The
 publishers
recognize full well that editorial offices with heavy use of mail, phone and fax
 cost a
good deal of money to run. They will pay as little as they can. Assuming that
 the
journal in question has reasonable circulation in university libraries, the sum
 of $1200
for annual expenses is about one-tenth of a realistic level of support. So, in
 my opinion
as the founder and editor for many years of a professional journal published by
 a
major international publisher, the society or editor should make firm
 representation to
the society and/or publisher for the dollars needed after contributions from the
 School
are added in.
