STATUS OF POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS

Postdoctoral fellows at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital have always
been considered "trainees" vs. "employees," except when put on research
project grants. The institution is now changing their status to
"employee." Is it appropriate to classify those fellows who are supported
by T32 and/or F32 grants as "employees?"
Even though the postdoctoral fellows will be classified as employees, they
will not be part of the institution's retirement program. We would
appreciate hearing from other institutions to know if this practice is
consistent with your policy.
