Re: Faculty Salaries charges vs effort

At UM the faculty consider themselves as professionals, that is they
do not work at an hourly rate, they work 100% and that is however
many hours they need. Their total effort may not be more than 100%
and their total compenstation is not more than 100% of their salary
An exception might be 9mo appointed people working extra in summer.
SO if they have 100% of their time committed to sponosred projects, they
may not teach (but I assume they attend committee meetings and meet
with students). Note that it is not a good idea for anyone to actually
be covered 100% by sponsor funds as that leaves no time to work on
new proposals, an activity which may not be charged to current sponsors.
If required to spend time in clinic, then I suspect that they must
correspondingly reduce their sponosored project percentage.
Anyway, work with percentages not hours.
