Federal Register Searching Patti Landers 03 Apr 1997 11:08 EST
Martha, for some reason, my e-mail message to you was returned, so I am posting this to the list. Maybe others will find it useful, too. Today's Federal Register Table of Contents http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/index.html This will bring up screen that says National Archives and Records Aministration. Under Federal Register Online via GPO Access, click on Table of Contents of the Federal Register. If you have Adobe Acrobat reader , you can push PDF file. It will load automatically. Press print (left button on the Adobe bar). If you do not have Acrobat reader, press text button. It takes many more pages to print off text file. To search for a specific article, note the number of the first page and go to: http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/aces/aaces002.html The screen will say GPO Access Keeping America Informed Electronically - Connect to GPO Databases Online. Scroll down using the right elevator button until you see a white window in the middle of the screen. Use the down elevator on the white window to find and highlight the Federal Register volume you want. The current Volume 62 (1997) is already selected by default. Continue down with the screen elevator button until you see another white box titled Search Terms. Type in the first page number of the article you want. Put it in quotes (e.g. "5981"). If you don't know the page number, but do know the date, you can search for a subject and date (e.g., "ecological assessment" AND date=2/10/97). When you have entered the page number or subject and date, press SUBMIT. Sometimes you get a message that the server is busy or down. Press submit again (and again...) When the search is complete, a sign that says GPO Access..Keeping America Informed Electronically - GPO Access Search Results will come onto the screen. Scroll down until you find the item of interest. Occasionally it is difficult to choose the one you want, but reading the summary helps. Press the text button and you will get ascii text. It takes many more pages to print and you don't get the word processed forms, but it is easy. If you want a word processed version to include forms, press PDF. If you are using Netscape it will come up with a message box that tells you there is an unknown file type. Choose save file. Instead of waisgait.pdf., change the file name and save it in a directory you can find easily (I use c:/temp). You can do several searches and saves before quitting to print. To print the PDF files, you must quit Netscape, open the Adobe Acrobat reader, go to the file directory, open file and print. TO SEARCH PREVIOUS TABLES OF CONTENTS: URL is gopher://clio.nara.gov:/11/register/toc Find what you want, then use http://www.access.gop.gov/su_docs/aces/aaces002.html to search out page number as instructed above.
