Rebudgeting in NIH "K" Awards Nancy J. Borders 28 Mar 1997 14:41 EST

We would like some information about rebudgeting on a K08 (Clinical
Investigator Award). If the approved budget indicates that the PI
will spend 70% of his time on this project (and charge 70% of his
salary), can he subsequently use those funds to pay the salary of
a research associate? The NOA indicates that the grant is under
Expanded Authorities, however, it seems to be the intent of these
projects to free the investigator from clinical duties allowing time
for research. How is this handled at other institutions? Also,
when did K awards come under Expanded Authorities? I thought that
was limited to the R series.

I realize that with an R01, this would not be an issue, but how about
the K08's. Thanks for any responses.
