Thank you. That is just the point.
For those institutions where the research of the faculty is NOT part of
the load upon which their salaries are calculated (as here and I would
bet hundreds of other places) the answer is that NSF pays, and it will
be over our gasping, prostrate, but well-represented bodies that they
discontinue this obligation. In my own way I am suggesting to you all
that this is not funny.
All of our campuses oblige (and then encourage) their faculty to be
active scholars, but our legislature believes that this is done on
weekends and after Seinfeld in the evenings. I think all the agencies
know this and are as unlikely to be changing their ideas as are the men
and women up in the most oxymoronically named state capital of them all
who spend the day in vituperative and salivary role modeling.
