Patient Care Costs -Reply Mary Ann Jurgus 09 Jan 1997 11:18 EST

Our Animal Care Budget Line Item covers all animal expenditures. The
purchase, the housing, special husbandry requirements, in-processing,
etc. are all charged out of one line item and that line is indirected. If an
animal is a "patient" due to something that happened in the facility rather
than the result of the experimental protocol, the facility would pick up the
charges associated with the "recovery", but any other "recovery"
expenditures are charged to the indirected line item. The costs
associated with "recovery" procedures need to be retrieved in the same
way that housing expenses are recouped.

Can anyone share their institution's practices of charging indirect costs
to "patient care costs" which are performed on animals? Examples are
animals receiving MRI's, laboratory/pathology tests, EKG's, etc. If the
"patient" is an animal, is your insititution recovering indirects on these
costs or are you holding them exempt as patient care costs?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
