Dean of the Graduate School
Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Dean of
the Graduate School and Associate Provost for Research at the University
of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). The individual selected for this position
will serve as the principal campus official in matters of research
policy and administration, and chief administrative officer of the
Graduate School. The position reports to both the Chancellor and
Provost regarding research and to the Vice Chancellor/Provost
concerning graduate education. The position will be available at the
beginning of the 1997-98 academic year. The salary range is competitive
and commensurate with the individual's qualifications.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is a major public urban Research II
institution; one of two doctoral degree granting campuses of the
University of Wisconsin System. The campus has approximately 17,300
undergraduates and over 4,450 graduate students enrolled in 47 Master's
and 17 Ph.D. degree programs, with 760 Graduate Faculty. The Graduate
School is responsible for research support and grants administration,
graduate student services, international programs, intellectual
property and technology transfer, and is the administrative home for the
campus Centers of Research Excellence, including the Laboratory for
Surface Studies, the Center for Urban Initiatives and Research, the
Center for Twentieth Century Studies and the Center for Great Lakes

UWM is seeking individuals for this position who will: take an active
leadership role in encouraging research, scholarship and creative
activity consistent with campus Strategic Plan; work aggresively to
increase extramural funding; creatively promote collaborative, inter-
disciplinary research, and research partnerships with the public and
private sectors; support and strengthen graduate research and
education, and enhance the integration of research in the undergraduate
curriculum.
Applicants and nominees must possess an earned doctorate degree, an
excellent record of scholarly achievement, have the credentials to be
appointed as a tenured faculty member in an academic department, strong
communication skills, proven leadership ability in an academic setting,
planning, budgetary and personnel management skill, extensive experience
in grantsmanship and extramural fund raising, and a willingness to work
within a system of faculty governance.
