Faculty Research Productivity Measures for Promotion -Reply Gerald McCulloh 20 Nov 1996 10:35 EST

Evaluation of promotion begins within a faculty member's department
with the adoption of guidelines for promotion which are approved by
the Senior Vice President and Dean of Faculties or similar chief
academic officer. The guidelines will specify the weight to be given
to teaching, research and service as articulated in the mission of
the school and/or department. A committee of peers usually reads the
faculty member's published works, solicits letters of support from
other members of the department or external support from recognized
members of the professional field of study, typically department
chairs in sister institutions or officers of professional
associations or certifying boards, and reviews any personal
statements or research plans provided by the candidate. The committee
should vote by secret ballot after discussing the strong and weak
points to be observed and forward the results to the department chair
or dean, depending on how the authority is vested in the institution.
