As many of you may already know, Don Sprengel, Associate Dean for
Research at St. Louis University, passed away on August 31, 1996 after
a long battle with cancer and heart problems. Don was a member of
both SRA and NCURA, and was active in both organizations even
throughout his extended illness.
Don was also a professor of public policy studies and had taught at St.
Louis University for 26 years.
I thought it was appropriate to post this news to the list, sad as it is,
because I knew Don had many friends in research administration
throughout the country, and it would be difficult to convey this
information in any other way.
As many of you know, Don battled long and hard against his illness. I
worked with him at SLU during some of the more difficult times, and the
man was absolutely amazing- he just kept coming to work and coming to
work, even when he had to have an IV administered to him in his office
on a daily basis. His driving mission was to ensure and uplift SLU's
position among the nation's most prestigious research institutions.
Despite all of his difficulties, however, he never, ever lost his sense of
humor.
Don was my friend, my teacher, and my mentor. I love him dearly and
will miss him terribly. I know many of his other students and friends feel
the same way.
For your information, SLU has established a research scholarship fund in
Don's honor.
