Grants and Gifts Ilze Krisst 19 Jun 1996 14:48 EST

We are currently struggling with determining whether funds to support
research, as well as teaching and training from various foundations
are "gifts" and should be housed in our foundation, or "grants" and
should be housed in the University proper. We, generally, regard
all funds that require a "deliverable" as funds that are not gifts
and should be housed in the University. That, however, does not
always work. For example, a learge sum of money given to a professor
to start a wildlife refuge and possibly do some relevant research
clearly does not have a "deliverable" to the direct benefit solely to
the benefactor. Yet, the actvities are very much realted to an
academic discipline and the research activities and time commitments
of a professor. Does anyone have any good thoughts on all this? I am
more interested in concepts than check-off lists. Thanks.
