Controller
West Virginia University
West Virginia University invites nominations
and applications for the position of Controller. With an
annual operating budget of $430 million, West
Virginia University is the state's land grant, major
research, doctoral degree-granting institution.
Enrolling 21,500 students in 164 degree programs, the
University consists of fourteen colleges and schools,
a comprehensive Health Sciences Center, and three
regional campuses including Potomac State College of
West Virginia University, West Virginia
University at Parkersburg and West Virginia University
Institute of Technology.
The Controller reports to the Associate Vice
President for Finance, providing staff support to this and
other senior university officers. The Controller
provides leadership to a staff of approximately 90
individuals to ensure the proper balance of customer
service and compliance from a financial accounting
and reporting perspective for the following functions:
General Accounting, Financial Reporting,
Sponsored Research Accounting, Plant and Construction
Accounting, Tax Accounting, Bursar Operations,
Federal Loan Receivables, Payables and Payroll. The
University follows Generally Accepted Accounting
Principles for public higher education
institutions by the Government Accounting Standards Board
(GASB). The Controller also serves as the
chief accounting officer for the West Virginia University
Research Corporation, as well as supporting
the regional campuses listed above.
Required qualifications include a Masters
Degree (or Bachelors Degree and CPA certification) in
accounting, finance, business administration
or related field; ten or more years experience in higher
education accounting at a land-grant or comprehensive
research university (relevant experience in large
and complex organizations other than higher education
may be considered by the search committee);
knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles,
federal tax issues, federal regulations and grant
and contract management principles and practices; strong
leadership, interpersonal, communication and
management skills as evidenced by a proven record of
accomplishment in previous positions; experience
with financial management information systems and
business process reengineering; and the ability to
interact with state officials, board members,
administrators, faculty, researchers and students.
Salary competitive with SREB institutions of
$63,000 to $85,000, dependent upon education and
experience.
