institutional budgets and indirect cost redistribution Kathy Sukanek 23 Apr 1996 12:34 EST

I was recently looking over the indirect cost redistribution policies
of the various institutions who responded to Diana Demers inquiry
earlier this year. I was surprised how many institutions return a
significant portion of the recovered indirect costs to a general fund
or the "university."

Our own policy has been to keep 45% to support the Office of Research
and its support programs and return 55% to the generating division.
The 55% is usually split between dean, department chair and pi with
varying percentages to each based on the school/college involved.

My question is to those who responded to Diana's question - what are
your institutional budgets? Presumably if large proportions of
indirect costs are being channeled to entities outside the Office "generating"
them, then the institution is substantially supporting the office
through institutional funds. Is that your experience?

thanks
