Several weeks ago, I posted an inquiry to the list regarding hiring of additional professional staff in historically one-person sponsored programs offices. Specifically, I was looking for salary trends. Following is a summary of responses received: Respondent: A public institution in WI New Staff: Half-time Grants Coordinator (with Master's degree) Salary: A little more than $10,000 for a 9 month contract Respondent: A private institution in PA New Staff: Full-time Science Associate with Ph.D. Responsible for proposal prep, editing, and funding searches for several science/health related schools Salary: $35,000 for 10 month appointment Respondent: A public institution in IL Staff: General grants administration responsibilities, with heavier emphasis in pre-award. Has Master's degree and approx. 8 years university experience. Salary: $35,000 Note: Respondent continually surveys opportunities in other universities and finds low-mid thirties (around $33,000) to be frequent. Respondent: A private institution in NC Staff: Senior grants administrators (called Assistant Directors) Salary: $35,000 equivalent Respondent: A public institution in GA New Staff: Research Project Specialist-Post Award (Develops post award activities, although much time is often spent in pre-award. Also supervises Graduate Assistant in using Internet/local network to identify funding opportunities.) Incumbent has Bachelor's degree and came with no grants experience; hence, the lower entry level salary. Salary: $28,000 Respondent: A private institution in MA Staff: Assistant Director. General grants administration duties including identification of funding sources, pre-award services, and post-award services. Position requires Bachelor's and 2 years experience in academic grant administration or proposal development. Incumbent has own portfolio of centers/departments, participates in policy/procedure development, and works quite independently. Salary: Mid-$40,000s (current salary) Note: Incumbent has been in the position for approx. three years. Institution considers the current pay low and is seeking an upgrade. Respondent: A public institution in KY Staff: Sponsored Programs Development Coordinator. Responsibilities include grant development, computer liaison to microcomputing center, web page person, information manager, etc. Incumbent has Master's degree and 6 years experience Salary: Just over $34,000 Note: A "sister" state institution hired a similar person at the same time at $36,000 Respondent: A public institution in VA Staff: Associate Director. Incumbent has Master's degree and came with 2 years grants administration experience with a federal agency. Responsibilities include disseminating funding information, pre-award activities, and information systems. Salary: Entry was approximately $28,000 but institution is currently seeking a $4,000-$5,000 raise. Respondent: A public institution in MI Staff: Title is Administrative Assistant III (but function is more of a Business Manager/Research Administrator Accountant II) and is highest level administrative position available to departments with $6-7 million in grants. Responsibilities: Financial, personnel, and proceduratl planning, management of physical facilties, preparation and review of research proposals and grant applications, and financial analysis, budget management, and personnel management. Manages multiple grant and general fund accounts. Requires a Bachelor's and 6 years experience, including knowledge of grant writing/administration and agency rules and regulations. Salary Range: Minimum of $33,618. Average for all personnel in this position is about $44,000 with average experience of approx. 20 years. Thank you to all who responded. Barbara H.
