Health Care Benefits for Retirees Mike Gilles 01 Apr 1996 09:56 EST

Michigan Technological University only recently (1992) started offering
health insurance benefits to retirees covered under the TIAA/CREF retirement
plan. The coverage is the same as employees but there is a 20% premium
co-pay by the retiree. The present eligibility is 80 points (years of
service plus age) or 65 with a minimum of 10 years of service. The
University wants to drop the 80 point qualification and only retain the 65
plus 10 years of service so that is would be medi-gap insurance which
obviously costs less. What is the health benefit policy for retirees at
your institutions? Also do your retirees have any life insurance benefits?
We have proposals going before the University Senate this week addressing
these issues and I would appreciate any input that you can give me. Thanks
