When I first came to Whitehead Institute the Grants Office was photocopying
and mailing every grant and fellowship proposal. One of the few unpopular
decisions I made was to change that process in order to get more
productivity out of the grants office and to place the responsibility where
I felt it belonged, back in the departments. I felt it gave more
ownership of the proposal to the PI, administrator, department and it has.
Due to this change I was able to restructure the Grants Office at that time
and the Grants office staff was very appreciative of the change. However
since the Grants office staff has turned over a couple of times since I
have been here the recent and current staff can't appreciate the benefits,
but they are there.
I also realize that this may not be for every institution. Our
Labs/Departments do have good administrative support so I felt they could
accept the burden without too much difficulty. That is not the case any
more in many universities and hospitals.

Our office is currently in the practice of leaving the mailing of proposals
in the hands of the principal investigator. We have been kicking around
the idea of changing this and mailing proposals for those who request this
assistance. If your office has recently (within the last two years)
changed to this practice, or if you have reverted back to NOT mailing
proposals, we would like to hear from you. Please let us know what pros
and cons you have to share.
Any input you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
